Gai wasn't any where near Neji at that time and plus he wasn't even ready to go into 8 Gates Form at that time. It's not because he didn't care about Neji, it is the fact that he did not know his exact location until Naruto pointed out the fact that Neji has died.

He doesn't need to go 8th gate against Juubi when everyone was body bagging, plus he wasn't there with Neji at that time, you can't blame Gai for that stupid Plot nerf Death. Kishi just doesn't have the ballz to kill off Main characters instead he used a side character, Neji who had so much hype and more Potential out of all the Konoha 11 yet was neglected almost the entirety of Part 2 and instead he was killed off for a stupid Pairing in order to make Hinata Heroine. Worst Plot Device I've seen.

People are complaining that Sakura should've died in Neji place but the problem I see here is that Hinata and the hyuga are with Naruto, Sakura has nothing to do with their affair.

If anything to blame, it's kishi sloppy writing.
