There are shows that have a clear good, and evil side. One Piece does an exceptionally good job with Moral Ambiguity. Use this thread to discuss examples and break down the moral dilemmas we as viewers get to observe in the series.

I'll start with East Blue. Shanks not attacking the mountain bandit for insulting him..but having Lucky Roo shoot one of the bandits in the head when they captured Luffy. It was the first chapter but makes a pretty big impact and sets the tone for the Moral Grey area in the series. Shanks didn't fight to preserve his own ego but he would kill someone without hesitation when it came to defending his friends.

Do share the moral grey areas you've noticed.

Luffy organized a drastically illegal jail break, freeing hundreds of violent and murderous criminals, to rescue another dangerous criminal. And we rooted for him.

World Government turning a blind eye to the broker market where people get sold as slaves and experimented on children in order to increase military power and keep big forces happy to maintain peace.

Remember how Jimbei wanted Luffy to be a hero?

Spoiler:

I don't know if this is a moral grey area but it sure is funny

Moral grey area means there is no clear right or wrong answer. There are both good points and bad points to the action.

Yeah that would be an example of Luffy's logic and moral grey area. lol Luffy will fight a warlord because of an interesting looking skeleton he just met(Brook)..but doesn't want to be labeled as a "Hero" since in his mind a hero would share his food and Luffy is selfish when it comes to food.

I think every single arc in One Piece probably has an example of a Moral Grey Area. There are so many situations were a character does something under specific circumstances where the end justifies the means.

No, imo there is no grey area. One piece is simply based on different perspectives. Strawhats at end of the day are criminals, but the jail break was never to break out other criminals, so that can't be directly blamed on luffy, but can be indirectly blamed on luffy due to the fact they escaped due to his jail break.

That's what grey areas mean.

It can't be a grey area tho.

Nazi : Killing jews right thing

Other people : Killing jews was a horrible thing

^^^^ simply a different perspective. Doesn't really make it a "grey area".

Franky's denial of his Bttale Frankies ships, and Tom's speech of creations' existence whether they be used for good or bad, the creator must love his creations as their sons.

They are bad, most of pirates on OP are vicious criminals, dont just look pirates based on Luffy's perspective, he is a very rare case in OP world and I really mean it very rare.

Is executing murderers justice? That is one of the most typical grey areas.

OP was originally supposed to end in 2002 as a kid's manga. Oda's editors told him that OP wasn't interesting enough so Oda cut off Shanks' arm. Oda screwed himself with that one.

Impel Down and MF are perfect examples of this issue. Including Shanks verdict. Well, they're kinda obvious, and made me torn up till now whenever I think about it. Should I support them, or should I not.

My personal fav; Donquixote pirates. Doffy is indeed brutal towards other people, but one must know that he's a classy antagonist who treasures his crew at most. He gets really angry when people made fun of Pica's voice and stomping his crew members. Doffy even considers Trebol & co. as his family rather than his own father.

His interaction with his crew are pretty compatible and looks so dear, like how he handles Diamante's and Trebol's quirks (Diamante's constant rejection when Doffy keeps on praising him though he admits it later on as Doffy stops from saying it, or Trebol always had his face too close to Doffy yet Doffy doesn't feel bothered in the end). In flashback, where Law and Baby 5 got attacked by pirates, Doffy avenged them while looking so mad. He too killed Baby 5's so-called fiance by burning down the guy's town because he wasn't that good for her.

Doffy actually care about Corazon (he helped his kid brother to find food to keep on living, he even warned Law about how important Corazon was for him as a brother), though he probably couldn't handle betrayal that well, hence killing Corazon was an option for a manic like him.

I feel guilty, because I also like this guy, aside hating him at the same time. He tortures other people, but he's sort of caring towards his crew.
