Should you get punished for making fun of a religion?

At first I think most would say of course, it's unfair and ignorant. However I want to take different step into this topic.

There is a man, a man that believes that every 20th of may a werewolf travels across the land and murders humans unless you sacrifice a chiken a to it.

So he tries to warn everyone about it, but no one listens and EVERYONE laughs or shrugs him off.

No one says anything when they laugh and make fun of this belief because it seems silly, yet everyone goes in an uproar when it comes to believing in a man up in the sky that watches you 24/7 and sees all the bad stuff your doing (like santa) and sends you to hell or heaven.

I leave you with this:

Criticizing is one thing while disrespecting is another. No, you don't have the right to disrespect someone by making fun of their beliefs.

Punishment is a little too much though.

As long as there is no physical abuse then no. Who cares about words?

Pumpkin Ninja said it well. It's not ok to make fun of someone's beliefs, but it's also not right to legislate that nobody can.

Punishment is too much. That's what "social sanctions" are for.

No, just like how you shouldn't be punished for saying anything that's outright despicable. Punishing people and infringing free speech is a dangerous road. This is, of course, at the exception for things like forums which are moderated as it's private.

You always have the right, but there's a difference between a right, and morality.

That's a dangerous road to take. I don't like the idea of people hovering around in positions of authority ready to punish people for what they deem as something worthy of punishing.

If you are harrasing a citizen for their beliefs. Yes you should get punished. There are already laws on harrasment. If you disagree with religion and have a opinion on it. Fine, but don't harass that individual on their beliefs.

This is me as a religious person talking. I've seen a lot of people on the internet criticizing religion on the level of obsession (insulting religion in general if a video has something remotely relating to religion, even if it's not a discussion about a religious action). Would I like those people to shut up? Of course. Is it right to make fun of religion? No. Is it a good idea to enforce this in general? No! Historically, this type of attitude has been abused. This method might keep bashing in check, but in the end, it's practically made for abuse, as it's something that can be subjective. How does one define "making fun of" and "harassing?"

It is a clear difference between harrasment and a opinionated statement.

It is commonly understood as behaviour intended to disturb or upset, and it is characteristically repetitive. In the legal sense, it is intentional behaviour which is found threatening or disturbing.

If you are going to constantly bash and be rude while the person ask you to stop. You are harrasing plain and simple. Do you tolerate sexual harassment or any other type of harassment?

A lot of people need to learn how to stfu and keep their thoughts to themselves. Noboddy wants to hear somebody constantly bashing their beliefs.

No they should never be punished for that.

people have a right to tell about their religion, and I am well within my rights to tell them my honestly opinion about their belief, just as they are allowed to tell me what they think of my "if you can't prove it I don't believe in it" attitude.

Why do people tend to generalize religion? I've seen it time and again whenever there is a mention of God or religion that's as specific as it gets-just god and religion. Which god, what religion etc doesn't even come into the picture, it's a gross over-generalization because there are different religion with many different beliefs, you hear about some of them and not about others cause not all are vocal or expect you to believe in them. Now I know that most of the time it's about the christian god and Christianity in general but if I said a black man robbed me all black people are gangsters(never having seen any other)- even if you knew I was particularly referring to the criminal would that make my statement any less ignorant? I am not complaining I just observe for most part but this should be pointed out since I feel better informed from my current perspective and culture then the people I see generalizing it. This is prominent with atheists too, same thing- they just say god. Why?

You might say this ain't relevant and not a big issue but that's just throwing your hands up and being ignorant out of laziness. People talk about being aware and well informed about other things- to consider everything and not just see the majority(individuality!) then why leave out this one. Similar thing already happened with words like Avatar and Karma- they made half-assed adaptions for the sake of humor, trends etc(internet!) and then that adaption became the actual meaning in their minds. That is not cool.

TLDR;
Read the whole thing-_-.

Such a nice thread. I always wonder the same. The only problem I have is that I didn't read. :bdpf:

You should've perhaps read my thread, You can criticize any idea but to criticize 'Religion' for one man's belief is stupid and like someone said- criticize, don't use it as an excuse to disrespect.
