I love Gaara, totally my favourite character, but nah dude. I think Gaara's blind rage in the beginning of part 1 was a downfall for him as he didnt assess the battle properly. He relied too much on just killing them straight up in the sand coffin. If he did just mindlessly release Shukaku, I feel Itachi would summon his Susanoo and instead of just punching him awake like Naruto did, he could just stab him directly.

Gaara part 2 was much better, he had much more intelligence and I think would be a better match for Itachi.

Shukaku takes over Gaara's body which would be a instantaneous transformation as that is bijuu mode not Gaara creating a clone of shukaku's body.

Then it is Shukaku vs Itachi.

But couldn't Itachi then use tsukiyomi on Shukaku
or Totsuka blade?

Even so the thing is Gaara loses, he doesn't win shukaku does since he takes over Gaara's body.

War Gaara has a much better chance at actually winning.
He can easily counter Tsuki with his defence and sensory ability.
