Who activated their Mangekyou first?

Was it Itachi or Kakashi? All I know is that Kakashi activated his mangekyou when he saw Rin die. Which means he's had it for a long time. So why hasn't he ever used it up until Shippuden? His mangekyou could have helped them end past fights quickly (i.e. against Zabuza, etc...)

Kakashi obtain the Mangekyo Sharingan first since Kakashi is older than Itachi, and Kakashi was a kid at the time. Kakashi probably never knew he had because he instantly passed out among awakening it. Sometime during the timeskip he learned to use it. Or he always had it, but his Chakra was too low to activate during part 1.

Itachi activated it when he was 13 which was 8 years after the nine tails attack.

Nobody knows why Kakashi didn't use MS until Shippuden.

At the moment and after Rin's death, Kakashi was not aware of his MS. Probably he was not even aware of such thing as MS.
It was after the encounter with Itachi and Kisame in Konoha, Kakashi started to try if he can active MS as well. Itachi showed his the true power of his sharingan (tsukuyomi).
During next encounter (Gaara arc), Kakashi said to Itachi (Yuura body) that the fight will not be the same as previous one. Itachi's reaction was: Kakashi-san you couldn't have.... (awakened MS).

So to the topic:
*Kakashi awakened MS before Itachi, but was unaware of that.
*Itachi mastered MS before Kakashi
*Itachi made Kakashi awaken MS, probably on purpose...

Kakashi beat itachi by YEARS. kakashi was like 13/14 when the kyubi attacked the village. And he killed rin before then (which is when he unlocked it) and then itachi wouldn't do it for another 7 years or so

After Kakashi and Obito got MS, Obito attacked Konoha. Uchiha took the blame, Shisui killed himself and then Itachi got MS.

Itachi is 5 years older than Sasuke meaning that he's 9 years younger than Kakashi. Hence that he's seen 3rd Ninja War and hated war. He was 4-5 years old at the time. Kakashi was either 13 or 14.

because kakashi didn't know..it was obito who activated both mangekyos..when they were in close proximity and obito saw run die..kakashi fainted moments later so didn't realize what happened until shippuuden when he was training

The sharnningan stages have to be awakened naturally, if the sharnningan awakens by something other than that, one would have to train in order to awaken it or go through a stressful enough situation to reawaken it. Fir example, if the sharnningan is awakened through a traumatizing event and then the user passes out, due to the random mixture of emotions, once they awaken they won't remember the sharnningan stage they were in. Most likely the sharnningan is a memory eye, and if one forgets a stage then they can't use it until they reawaken the perquisites for using such a stage.

It was Kakashi. Here is actually the order of people who awakened the mangekyou sharingan out of all of the MS users we have seen (excluding borrowed Sharingan users like Kakashi and Danzou and excluding the Shins since we don't know when or how he got mangekyou)
