Deidara was expecting naruto to fight 1 on 1 like he did with gaara and sasuke . Deidara even told kakashi to go away and help sakura and the old lady fight sasouri . That naruto should be able to fight Deidara by himself. But naruto was too weak and need kakashi to be there to face Deidara. Kakashi alone would of put up a good fight also .At the start it was

I don't think Deidara would have won still if it had been one one one....But that's a big IF. The reason I say this is becuase Naruto himself only learned Odama Rasengan at the time.....But according to Jiraiya he could go up to 2 tails in his bijuu cloak without loosing complete control. And it took up to 4 tails to repel Orochimaru.

So once Naruto entered bijuu cloak form Then Deidara would find himself hard pressed like he did with Gaara and since there was no village to use as a hostage where they fought Deidara MIGHT have possibly lossed to a crazed beserk Naruto/Kurama.

Naruto is not a long range fighter at the time, which was needed to take him down. Either that, or he tricks him to fighting close quarters.

But, yeah...Kishimoto always does this, first Sasuke outclasses Naruto by a large margin...Then Naruto catches up and surpasses him.

It makes sense...Sasuke appears for a few cool scenes...But, to have a character like that in the spotlight for extended time? Like the outcry of Garystu/Narujesus when he improved Naruto during war arc. Do people really want a main character with an answer for everything right off the bat?

The list for why Naruto was so shit is massive. Kakashi favoured Sasuke and taught him chidori. Jiraiya was too philosophical based in his teachings. Naruto didn't even know what his chakra nature was etc. He had to ask Asuma for help.. Sasuke got huge Oro buffs. There are many more..

Gaara fought Deidara by himself , Naruto couldn't face Deidara by himself and win . Deidara was unimpressed by naruto skill and felt he can beat him easily
