[Discussion] I don't want to die... but I don't want to live forever.

Why do you want to live forever and why don't you want to die?

With me id like to live forever, not because of selfish means. More of curiosity. Id like to live to see changes in our galaxy. Our milky way galaxy colliding with Andromeda. Science taking it a step further to explore other galaxies, finding new life on other planets.

We are still living in the dark ages. In terms of knowledge of the universe we are merely just a 3 year old constantly asking questions.

This is more or less my reason. I'm not really in the mood to explain further, I may edit later.


I will say that the decision of death makes one wonder. Suicide is generally frowned upon and regarded as being a "weak mindset". But what do we say of the person that says an immortal life is intolerable? A suicidal mind is generally perceived as one that makes the decision that life isn't worth living anymore. In the case we're discussing, the mere prospect of an immortal life is enough to make one "suicide". At this time, they're actually happy with life. This is a very interesting point to take note of, because it implies there's nothing bad going on in their life that should compel them to believe that life wouldn't be worth living. Does this question bring to reality who is a pessimist and who isn't? I mean, it's not like we can say for sure what the future will hold, and such people will rather die based on potential outcomes.

It's funny, because in contrasts, we try to brighten up the future for a suicidal mind, telling them "there will always be something to live for". I'm old enough to know that we humans have a knack for spitting out empty rhetoric, but still.

It makes you wonder if suicide is a legitimate mindset. It makes me wonder how a moralist would argue these two mindsets in comparison (of course there's the defying nature argument that I'm sure would be mentioned).

The suicidal mind: life isn't worth living (I'm aware that in many cases, it's not as simple as this)

People who disfavor immortality often bring up how watching loved ones dies will be too painful, how life will become too boring. Aren't these concepts we fight against when trying to convince someone not to kill them self? So you see, it seems more people than we realize would submit to such pain. In this scenario, few eyes even look at it as a bad thing (for some reason, it doesn't cross our minds as it would if a person said he or she wanted to off their self right at this moment because their loved ones died). The question is simply would you choose immortality over mortality. That's all anyone see.

I don't belittle either decision though. I can certainly sympathize and empathize with both decisions.

There's nothing wrong with being selfish, everyone is deep down. It's not a bad thing until you make it one. But saying that isn't a selfish means made me laugh.

Your own curiosity serves no one but yourself, which is selfish behavior.

I know what you mean...you just want to see how the world will be as it goes on...at the same time it will be boring. :| And, once your dead you're gone...so live life to the fullest.

You never truly die. Life dosen't end when you die. But people believe in different things so I will leave it like that.
