The chunin exams were interrupted midway by Orochimaru's henchmen, and Ace, as impulsive as ever, wanted a proper battle with the Uchiha. The day was quite pleasant, and the sound of birds chirping filled the sky. Trees surrounded them all around, and whatever minimal sunlight could sneak through, sneaked through with it's maximum intensity through the trees. However, the area above them was open, and not covered by any trees or any opposition. Raising his left eyebrow as always, Ace decided to start the battle with an illusion. Gathering his chakra, he sent it to his opponent's brain, thereby manipulating his senses to decieve him into thinking a giant fireball descended from the very sky, with utmost speed. Even though the fireball wasn't the real deal, it gave off heat(as mentioned in the wikia). After casting the illusion, Ace would follow up by hurling several explosive tags at Sasuke, and would detonate them with a single handseal.
