He fought sword battles against shanks, yet he is still the world's strongest swordman. The fact that he still had the title means that he beat shank. I always wondered why people had him so high up.

You must remember that Shanks has incredible control over haki as well. So we cannot conclude that Mihawk has truly "beaten" him in battle before

It was already said that Shanks and Mihawk always fought to a draw and they haven't fought each other in 12 years. Shanks isn't a real swordsman either. A real swordsman uses actual sword techniques and lives by the sword.

Shanks may have been a swordsman who used Nitoryou to an extent. But since he lost an arm he is no longer a swordsman and thus not qualified for a battle with Mihawk.

he beat shanks at swords..and thats still just an assumption considering he may have only taken up the title after shanks lost his arm

It's rather otherwise,
Shanks has some swordsmanship to duel with Mihawk on many occasions...

But true, Mihawk is one very OP individual in OPverse... A 'Best in the World' in a certain field...

You can't have swords on your jolly roger, hold a sword yourself since your youth, use it as your main weapon everytime we see you, have "legendary" battles and rivarly with a master swordsman(who ends up being world wide known as the world strongest) while not being a swordsman yourself.

It would totally shit on your rivarly and make you wonder why exactly someone like Mihawk who is only interested by swordsmen would be interested by someone like Shanks to the point of having "legendary" battles with him.

Shanks even implied when talking to Whitebeard that he received multiple injuries during his fights against Mihawk when Mihawk has no scar on him, so i'm not even sure where it's mentioned he never lost to Mihawk

It's not clear was it just sword battle?

Mihawk is better than Shanks when it comes to sword battle, but we don't know what Shanks has.

i doubt that one of them did beat the other or may be thier win loss record was a tie cause mihawk said somthing like " as if i would like to settle things with a one armed man " when he met shanks for the first time in the manga
AS for the WSS title i think both shanks and mihawk were the strongest swordsmen back then and were fighting to determine who is the best ,when shanks lost his arm people came to assume that he lost part of his power so mihawk got the title by benfit of doubt

He's the worlds strongest swordsman for a reason! Not to mention the guy casually sails the worlds harshest seas in a teeny tiny rowboat just big enough for him and his sword!

Shanks is more of a haki user (CoC) than a swordsman.
