This seems more likely (apart from the bold part). People need to realize that this is Sarada and Sasuke gaiden and Naruto is merely a figurehead in this manga now. He's dispensible because he's unimportant to the plot. I wouldn't be surprised if Shin solo'd him/came close to doing so and Sasuke swoops in and saves the day.
