I just watched episode 18, and what I understood is that Archer and Shirou are the same person, and Archer is Shirou in the future, am I right? If I'm right, Shirou must be impressed, he is pretty badass in the future.
No one knew his name. I think it became obvious that he is Shirou to Tohsaka and Saber after they fought Archer and when Shirou was able to do same projections.
Whole explanation about how the Grail summons Heroic Spirits is included in the Fate route which comes before the UBW route in the VN. Long story short; Heroic Spirits are removed from the constraints of time and ring of reincarnation, moved to the Throne of Heroes, a place that stores Heroic Spirits and exists outside of the World and time axis itself - which would mean Heroic Spirits can be summoned from the past, the present and the future. And the Holy Grail summons Heroic Spirits into the Servant classes from the Throne of Heroes.
Shirou's hair goes white from stress and his eye and skin colour change from constant use of Projection affecting his body over the years. Anyways, they have the same eyebrows and you'll notice how similiar they look as soon as Archer's hair comes down. And Archer is like 15-20 years older than current Shirou.
In Prisma Illya, Shirou from a certain timeline already has both his skin and hair partially changed to the same color as Archer's.

That's the same conclusion I came to. Thought it was really neat that that's who Archer winded up being. The constant comparison makes much more sense now and I thought it was epic. Makes sense why Archer hated Shirou's ideas so bad.
