What do you mean? I think you may have misread what he said, the Awakening is the thing that happens "after."

Awakening ? Surpassing your own limits with your devilfruit,for example Doffy did it 
,you can use your abilities perfectly and not only the basics,for example Luffy using gear 2 3 4,also he'll be able to unlock more...
Doffy meant "you can do more"...
For example Doffy can surround an entire Island with strings also he can turns towns into strings

Wow, really? Basics? Manipulating the speed of your blood blow, expanding your body and then covering it in haki for air pressure... These are all basics? Or did you mean to say Luffy has gone passed the basics to possibly awakening / close to, his DF... Because Doffy didn't sound so sure he's using its full potential...

I think pple have the misconception that the gears are an advancement in his df when in reality they r just the manipulation of what is already possible with this particular df. Pumping yo blood faster to increase yo speed/accellaration is something that wld b possible for anyone in op but it wld b fatal while to Luffy who has exapandable veins is not so as they can take the punishment.
Awekening as far as I apprehend is Oda telling us that now we will see stuff that was not possible normaly with df's such as it was with Dofla tearing the town to strings. Basically awekaning brings about new possibilities to the use of a df out side of the initial powers granted by the df. Chopper says his rumble balls distort tge wavelenghts of a df think of awekening as an augmentation to these wavelenghts, distortion yes but far more controlled.
