you are completely wrong.......asuma didnt know the secrets of hidan yet he managed to cut his head and also remember kakuzu was also there........it was two kage leveled ninja vs 1 jounin and three chuunin.........so we cant say asuma is weak......he had a rare element too......remember shikamaru deceased hidan as he knew the secrets.......so asuma is not weak but yet not powerful as kakashi.............
You are partly wrong. Kakuzu and Hidan were by no means kage level, specially the latter. They were strong, but not even close to kage level...

This indeed troubles me. During that time, Akatsuki didn't even get One Tail, Two Tails, Three Tails and Four Tails. Fifth, Sixth(forget the fillers) and Seventh Tails are not mentioned at all. But we can know that Akatsuki had obtained some tailed beasts during the fight b/w Naruto and Deidara. Had Itachi along with Kisame run away after their encounter with Kakashi, Gai,etc. after the 3rd died, then the reason for Itachi's appearance is quite clear. But they still pursue Naruto who was with Jiraiya. Again Madara told Sasuke the reason for Itachi's appearance after the 3rd died(ie.to let Danzo and elders know that he is still alive). Can this part be Kishi's mistake? Or may be i am over speculating.

Now that you mention Gai, I was thinking that it would make sense if shinobi used the "gate opening" jutsu as a last resort when facing a powerful enemy. If Kakashi had done that during his encounter with Pain he would endured further by boosting his MS. Can you imagine Naruto using sage mode while opening the gates, or Sasuke opening the gates while fighting Danzo and Raikage? Or better yet, Naruto opening the gates while on sage mode and using the kyuubi's chakra =)...I remember Deidara saying that they`ve already caught two of the Jinjurikens to Naruto when they were capturing Gaara as you are talking about.
Well, it may not be a mistake considering three facts:
1: We haven`t seen the 5 tail and 7 tail captured in the manga/anime yet, so it might have been them Deidara was talking about.
2: The only known fact is that the Kyubi has to be sealed last. There`s no place stated that you cannot seal the others in random order(Not sure though, so correct me if i`m wrong).
3: Even if they catch one, doesn`t that mean that they have to seal him/her right away.
Maybe that`s what Kisame and rest of Akatsuki(except Itachi) were thinking when Itachi and Kisame went to Konoha. To capture Naruto and have him captivated untill the rest of the tailed beast have been captured.
I was talking about Gai when i said that anyone caught in the Mourning Peacock would die, and that he was kinda like a better version of Hidan(That`s what i believe at least. He can`t be called Kakashi`s rival for nothing
