Given Kishimoto's light-hearted answer, he likely forgot that he ever wrote in the "lover" bit and it was just a plot device to make Itachi's story more tragic. Only thing that is confirmed is that in Kishimoto's head-canon, Itachi had fangirls. Or at least did. Becoming a mass murderer and joining Akatsuki likely scared them off.
