I've notice some interesting aspects when it comes to what essentially Zetsu is and the vague hype that follows around this unique character. Although portrayed as a weak character with hardly any purpose to the shinobi world, his creation is in fact makes a very intersting connection for the already known powerful princess named Kaguya.

You would immediately know where I'm going with this and I hope you would find this connection quite plausible despite not being confirmed factual.
Starting off with what already knowledge we have on Zetsu, we know that Zetu is a parasite that feeds of the chakra of others and can restore to whoever he/she pleases:
With that ability well known, we can tell that there is no limit to how many spores this parasite can produce.
Zetsu goes on to show this power by producing a nations worth of clones during that last great ninja war.
Like a network, he was able to spread his communications to ever spore or clone around the world while locating and relaying any message to every individual that makes physical contact on the earth:
Eerie enough, this creature who has no limitation to how many he/she can be produced or the specifics of who zetsu came to be. It also comes to mind of why this creature never came about world conquest in the first place?
Watching the video that I mentioned previously, I found a strong connection between the princess in that video and the one in the naruto series.
That term is "Cordyceps."
Cordyceps are sac fungai that are parasitic to insects (as noted in the video link) and arthropods such as centipede, scorpions, etc.
By connecting the video to this series, it's safe to say that the white zetsus who were once humans before are being mutated and mind controlled by the very thing that created them. That thing/person is gedo mazou aka god tree aka Kaguya herself.
Yes, princess Kaguya who was deemed the mother of Zetsu was responsible for attempting to establish a kingdom of here very own quote on quote "mushroom people."
While digesting the interesting points that were made out in this video, I stumbled into some important clues that may or may not justify Zetsu's hype.
When Black zetsu was sent on a mission to get the feudal lord, he hyped himself of being the land itself:
We're all aware of the connections he can make all around the world with just one touch of a route, but what use is that against the Kage and all its high ranked body guards?
Well in this split second of the video here:
It implicates the the resourcefulness of what fungus can do to the land.
It is not only tied down to using just mokuton, but he can probably shift the land or move stones to he/she leisure.
That would explain why Zetsu were the only ones able to go in and out of Madara's hideout or save Obito's body from the boulders (by theory).
Zetsu as a whole starts to make a lot more sense after corresponding it to this video. But one more interesting characteristic that Zetsu can do (black zetsu to be specific), is to control dead bodies.
He can control the very use of any dead body or limb he is controlling.
So if he can control bodies that already decease, imagine if Black Zetsu returned to the Boruto series with a former kage or Akatsuki member?
We might be able to Zetsu's true potential.
