Saved Naruto against Haku, got 2T Sharingan. Conflicted emotions when choosing to abandon Naruto and let him live instead of killing him, 3T Sharingan. Felt guilty for killing Itachi, Mangekyou. His relationships played a role for his power ups.

Madara and Sasuke each had something they wanted to protect, it just wasn't their comrades. Sasuke wanted to protect his various missions to get justice. Madara wanted to protect the Moon's eye plan. Each of them was hugely driven to obtain power.

However, Naruto's conviction was greater, in part because he also wanted to save his friend, not merely defeat him.
