My theory is that when Sarada was born she was very sick and very weak, and only given a short amount of time to live.

Karin saw how much this upset Sasuke and since she was in love with him and wanted nothing but him to be happy, she sacrifced herself to save Sarada, essentially giving Sarada her own lifeforce, and then eventually dying because of it

Sasuke and Sakura then gave Sarada those glasses as a momento of the women who saved her life. But have yet to tell her.
