I actually remember reading an article that said often the sperm that fertilizes the egg isn't the first sperm that got there. Other sperm try to break the wall around the egg and die failing, only weakening it. Another sperm can then break through a weakened spot and fertilize the egg. IDK how accurate it is though, it was a while ago. I think that's what he's referring to.
