Was there a reason why he didn't use his Kekkie Genkai (Gold manipulation) in order to help save his village?

Was it not actually gold? Is gold useless in NV?

What did he battle Gaara with?

It's either he can create gold or there is an abundant supply around otherwise he would be fighting with a few gold specks

He can probably magnetize anything right? I would assume that's what Gaara, Sasori, and the 4th Kazekage can do. They just have preferences.

I vaguely remember a scene in which one of the Sand Elders said sth like "We need to find more gold so Lord 4th can develop more Jutsus."

If he could actually create gold, they wouldn't need to find more gold for him. Tho now that you mention it, what did he use to fight Gaara? :|
