Why did Danzo stay in power for so long?

My Guess, Hurizen was too weak to pass judgement on those he was close to.

He let Orochimaru escape which worked out great!

Then lets Danzo hold one of the highest ranking positions in the village beside him and he was crooked ever since Tobirama passed the torch on to him.

Danzo stole Kabuto as a kid,
provoked the uchiha massacre / attacked shusui,
conspired with orochimaru to conduct DNA test,
attacked kakashi and yamato as kids.
Conspired with Hanzo to kill the original Akatsuki including Yahiko,
Used Roots to attack other villages before and after the 3rd hokage tried to disband the roots.

Like did he really even care about the village? He was a true shinobi gangsta

Although no one directly challenged him in his Prime Hiruzen didn't care and was a push over. He only cared about his happiness as hokage which allowed Danzo to pull off shady deals underneath him.He happily went into retirement and left everything to Minato who failed n died off.

Hiruzen allowed the root to be founded in the first place. It's a plan B for when diplomacy failed - which was too often back then.

Yes, Hiruzen noted many times that he was unable to stop those close to him. Wasn't until Orochimaru attacked the village directly that he finally tried to stop him. Danzo never actually attacked the village, and was a help to it in many ways.

What some people don't understand is both sides of the coin are needed to run a country/village/whatever in life. That goes for real life and this manga. Hashirama(Who Hiruzen was practically a clone of in terms of personality) had Tobirama by his side for the dark matters, though Hashirama had a better control over Tobirama than Hiruzen did of Danzo. The problem with the "dark side" of the leaders, is Tobirama and Danzo both showed they ultimately failed at leading a village. They were too harsh much like Hiruzen was too kind. Unless you have the perfect balance ala Hashirama/Tobirama, you're going to fail. I think Tobirama realized this himself and decided to choose the polar opposite of him and the clone of his brother to succeed him, rather than picking Danzo.

because he was the only true shinobi and the real reason the leaf became so powerful during the 3rds reign. danzo spied on other villages and attacking them isn't a bad thing thats what true shinobi do not naruto and his fairy tale crap.

danzo showed the other villages why they should fear the leaf and because of it you can see how much nicer the leaf is compared to all the other villages. hiruzen was a shit leader he never did anything and the people he was left in charge of died like crazy it was stated the tannins generation took the most losses and that was under hiruzens command while root which was "disbanded" still kept all its members alive under danzos leadership and they were the ones who did the real dangerous stuff.

Because he's an amazing strategist honestly. He was a strong ninja not openly *known* to be evil. He got power of a 'last resort' corp whose trademark is that even their "President" doesn't know everything about it.

Half of his evil actions were probably suspect at best. After the Uchiha Massacre though, I think Hiruzen was afraid to rock the boat which was a huge mistake.
