A less than full power Edo SM Hashirama who had expended a massive amount of chakra on restraining the Juubi, putting up the Four Crimson Yang barrier, and clones still managed to defeat Edo Madara who was revived "past his prime".

Of course, this changed after he was revived and got back his Rinnegan. Your premise that Hashirama cannot defeat Madara 1v1 falls apart, as Madara has lost to Hashirama 1v1 multiple times.

Madara's sharingan was off due to chakra exhaustion which was the same reason Hashirama was out of SM. Its a little bit like Naruto and Sasuke too in the fact that Hashirama didnt want to kill Madara but had no choice at the end. I think if Hashirama would have started the fight with the intent to kill, it would have been over much sooner.

He was a close second best of his generation. Hashirama was the only one that could have defeated him then, all others would have lost. Plus, even though the manga runs off the theme of a stronger new generation, I think EMS Madara could have only been beaten by Hashirama, RSM Naruto, Rinnegan Sasuke, and a draw with 8 gates Guy. Lots of people will throw out Itachi as someone that could beat him but even Itachi admitted he could not. If he thought he could, he would have fought tobi before the nine tails attack.
