SM Hashirama versus EMS Madara with Kyuubi. They were pretty much equal.

This scan is just before their final attack which will decide the winner. Both are equally worned out.

But Hashirama manages to trick Madara with Wood Clone and claims the victory.

During their final talk, Madara probably activates Izanagi.

But why does he delays the Izanagi ? If he sets the time for a minute or two, he'll win this fight and leave with Hashirama's corpse which would be more useful than a piece of his meat. He was able to use KB and leave Tobirama's hideout and retreated somewhere safe to treat his wounds.
Someone who is able to do all this should be able to keep fighting a little more.

I initially thought it was just plot and tried not to bother myself with it but lately I begin to ponder about this.

What would happened if Madara decided to kill Hashirama instead of faking his death.

Pros would be
- Hashirama would be out of his way to the IT Plan.
- Instead of a tiny bit of Hashirama's DNA, he could've had his corpse which would undoubtedly more valuable.

But there are also some cons.
- Konoha would be out for his head with Tobirama as their leader.
- His actions would be heard by all elemental nations and that he was still alive.
- Against all this potential threats, he lacked one of his eyes and fatally wounded.

I think Madara decided that in order to accomplish his ambition, he needed to make some sacrifices. Just like how Obito let Kakashi win by having him crush his curse seal in order to become Juubi's Jin.

Makes sense or he didn't want to kill Hashirama.

No, hashirama spared madara.

as you can see hashirama could just whoop madara in a couple of seconds with Mokujin and Wood dragon.
But he was so manly he fought w/o his ninjutsu

It depends on whether or not the Izanagi was pre-set before or at the end of the battle. Either way, if Madara had killed Hashirama, Konoha would surely retaliate, and he would be left weakened from his wound and without an eye. Madara wanted people to think he was dead so he could carry out his plan in anonymity; he can't do that if people still knew he was alive.

But it doesn't make sense for him to set Izanagi before the battle. He was resurrected with his wounds. Izanagi basically resets your body to the point you activated it. So he must've activated Izanagi after Hashirama stabbed him.

First of all, what would have a completely drained Madara done against Hashirama, who apparently still had enough strength to at least make a Wood Clone?

Second, one could argue that:

1) Madara only cast Izanagi on himself prior to the battle merely as a back-up plan [ ]. If he saw that he couldn't defeat Hashirama, then he was most likely determined to just go along with his plan B.

2) Madara didn't want to take the risk of coming back from Izanagi, as the chance he'd still die to Hashirama was fairly high, and then it would be game over for him. Madara is more careful than that.

But the thing is is that he SET it to activate later. So in other words, Izanagi didn't activate until after he was dead.
That's why he still had his wounds, but I guess izanagi doesn't let the person revive dead so he had wounds but was
still alive. When he pre-set it, it didn't activate right away. He can't make Izanagi work for hours at a time.

He was able to use KB after he came back to life. He managed to escape Tobirama's hideout as well. Hashirama on the other hand collapsed right after Madara 'died'. Madara obviously had strength to fight if he wanted to.

Second, one could argue that:

1) Madara only cast Izanagi on himself prior to the battle merely as a back-up plan [ ]. If he saw that he couldn't defeat Hashirama, then he was most likely determined to just go along with his plan B.

He was resurrected with his wounds, where Hashirama stabbed him. This shows that he used Izanagi after he got stabbed.

2) Madara didn't want to take the risk of coming back from Izanagi, as the chance he'd still die to Hashirama was fairly high, and then it would be game over for him. Madara is more careful than that.

But he risks dying while he won't have any control over his body. If Tobirama simply took his eyes out to experiment his plan would've failed. Or if his body was destroyed. Resurrecting sooner was less risky then what he chose to. He knew Hashirama was just as worn out as him, on top of that he would have the element of suprise.

Except he didn't have his Sharingan active during the final clash with Hashirama. He didn't have it active at the moment he was being stabbed nor after [ > ]. That's why he wasn't able to distinguish between the real Hashirama and the Wood Clone. The only possible explanation is that he activated it where the panel focuses on his EMS or did so prior, but then that begs the question of why his wound still remained.
