I don't know, maybe because he didn't believe she could take on the Caster spirit.

Considering I usually have a great dislike for heroic protagonists but love Shirou, yeah, he did pretty well as a character. He's a pretty complex character that could honestly spawn pages of discussions. Most VN readers love him.
