Was Hanzo hyped?

He's one of my top 3 characters but I get the feeling he was kage level strong in comparison when their were no high teir kage to compare him to.

Well he did solo the Sannin in their prime (and I'm pretty sure Oro didn't have ET then) but its still an incredible feat. Only high tiers can compete with a single Sannin and the super high tiers can take all 3 of them and even Jiraiya was amazed Pain beat Hanzo (even though its implied Pain only won because Hanzo rusty) so I'll say he lived up to his hype.

After the battle with Hanzo the Sannin were leaving the Hidden Rain then that's when they met Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan. Jiraiya stayed to help them and Orochimaru and Tsunade left.

Nagato was 35 and Jiraiya was 54 when they died so Jiraiya had 20 years over him. The Rain orphans were 10 when they met Jiraiya. He trained them for about 3 years then in the 2 years after they had made Akatsuki and when they were 15 is when Yahiko died which is perfect because the DB says 20 years ago is Nagatos takeover of Akatsuki and the rain. So the Sannin were about 30 when they fought Hanzo and that's prime.

By implications and portrayal, yes he is > all the Sannin at once (no ET of course) because he beat them all in their prime. The OP is asking whether or not Hanzos hype is legit and soloing the Sannin is a feat only people Nagato tier and above can do. This isn't a versus thread on who would win its simply discussing his hype.

He learned it when he was a kid so yes this would be including SM Jman and all their boss summons. Whether or not SM was used is irrelevant but we know he did have it at least. This is all his hype, remember. No one knows how strong he was because he stopped fighting for years and lost his skills (that's when Pain killed him) and when he was revived he was in the same out of shape form he died in but what we do know is Prime In shape Hanzo can defeat the Sannin and their boss summons and that their alone is a ridiculous feat since very few can do that.

to add some perspective though, it couldn't be all that difficult to defeat somebody when he had a summon of equal size that spewed poison gas. Sannin or not, they still had to breathe, and he was the only other being around there that had any immunity to it.
