Appropriate Age?

Hello all

At what age do you think it is appropriate to let my little sister read Naruto (or manga in general)? I'm asking because there are some "elder" themes in it (look at Sexy Jutsu for example). I'd like her to start reading a. because reading is good for her, b. Part 1 has many strategic fights to show her intelligence is a good quality to have and c. I want to advance her mind by doing intellectual things above her "age level" because she finds school work really easy.

Thanks :D

Fresh out the womb the iPad should've been playing episodes or swiping manga scans.

I never read Detective Conan but it seems like a child-friendly manga.
As for Naruto, I'm sure it'll be fine starting around the age of 10/11. Maybe start with something like a sports manga first? Manga is good. Don't let her get into make-up magazines and other crap of that sorts.

Yeah, I don't want her to be a "girly girl". I want her to be intellectual. Problem being with sports manga is that (although she likes watching football [soccer if you're American] with me) she's not interested in sports besides sprinting and gymnastics. I haven't read Detective Konan either but I'll read it before deciding.

Mmm, I don't know if I should let her read things like "sexy jutsu" and stuff when she's 7 (nearly 8).

I have a perfect example.

When I was a kid watching DB I had no idea that Master Roshi was reading porn in the bathroom or that he was a pervert. I had no idea shaggy was getting high in Scooby-Doo and was always hungry because he had the munchies. I had to had been like 7.

Kids won't get it even if you put it infront of them because the meaning of youth is inexperience. They'll be amazed by the characters and colors and stuff. If she's watching it with you and see's the sexy Justu she wouldn't understand a boy turning into a girl with clouds around her unless you told her.

I mean it depends, most basic shonen jump are meant for the comprehension of kids 10+. And even then they still won't understand a good amount of what's happening.

But if she's interested let her, I mean I remember being a kid watching way worst stuff, even though I had good parents.

I understood pretty much everything in the Shonen manga when I was 10/11. She's quite intelligent so I doubt she'll have trouble understanding it (though vocabulary may be an issue as she's 7, nearly 8). She is interested but I'm weary about adult themes like "Sexy Jutsu" and the big-breasted-weak girls in other manga stereotype.

the age you want her to read

That's the problem.

Damn you misogynistic bastard. Why can't she decide what she wants to read? Let her be an independent female! Typical man, trying to bring women down... Women are strong and can read whatever they want!

Lol there are no colors in manga. But yeah, I get your point. Though it's still something I'm a bit weary of. Don't want my mum coming down on me if she starts making jokes about naked girls lol

Really? I was a little older.

Don't let her watch it yet. There are things that will be scary to her like Orochimaru, Sakon etc. Too much killing for a 7 year old.

Nothing to do with her being female. It's the fact she's 7 and Naruto has overt adult themes.

She doesn't mind scary things (I doubt she'd be particularly scared or Oro or Sakon) but the killing thing is a good point. I'm gonna have to either wait till she's older and give her chapter books now or somehow found out how she feels about death lol.

The younger the better mature more intelligent people won't enjoy it as much.

Well if anything you should introduce her to Shojo manga, that's geared towards females. Introducing her to a series geared towards guys might not be the best of ideas.

They have series with tough chicks and female writers, etc. in Shojo.

You have to know if she's actually interested in anime/manga.

I'd say ten is not just appropriate but also a good age to start getting into Naruto.
By then she should be able to follow the story well enough and it will accompany her throughout childhood.
