Lol you actually believe that thing. Itachi if serious, wouldn't kid around there. He would've knocked Naruto out cold and grab him before Jiraiya could solve the Genjutsu trick with the lady.

He wanted to keep his Double Agent Identity a secret from Kisame and Jiraiya both, which was the reason why he kid around there.
Instead of using Amaterasu on the Toad Stomach, he could use it on Jiraya and end him there. From his reaction it would be safe to tell that Jiraiya had no idea what Amaterasu was at the moment.

It's been cleared in the manga. His only connection to the village was Hiruzen and elders. No other knew about him. Thats why he showed up when Hiruzen died, to send a message that he was still alive. And his deal with Obito itself proof that he is being of use to the village by keeping Obito from attacking the leaf.
