Well not everyone can be a main character - or impact upon shinobi society and Naruto (... it is his manga after all) in obvious ways.

But I feel like there were characters who looked like they were going somewhere and then... just didn't. Examples;

• Tenzo - there's a good amount of backstory, mostly thanks to anime filler. But the 4th War Arc? What the hell, what kind of ending is that for him? He could/should have had more influence/more development etc but I guess Kakashi's swag left too big a shadow for him to shine.
• Tenten - the part where she gets hold of a relic of SotsP's (banana palm fan) and uses it, only to not have enough chakra and that's it. I honestly thought Team Guy and Tenten (especially) would have a chance to really/truly shine but nope. Neji dies, to save a boy who has ridiculous regen-healing via Kyubi with Sakura (Tsunade the Sannin's apprentice) at the wayside... what the ****... honestly, THAT would have been an f'ing perfect time to use that god damn Yin Seal, but naaaaah - must wait for Sasuke-kuuuuun.
• Sakura - she lacked capability as a kunoichi, a fighter. Soemone who was affective in battles. Good med-nin but that's it for me. The rest was badly developed fan service. If you removed Sakura, she could have been easily replaced by someone else because a) she doesn't end up with Naruto, b) her romantic relationship with Sasuke makes no sense. Her skills as a kunoichi feel a bit forced to me as well, not the intelligence/medical know-how, but the enhanced strength. My head-canon states that Tsunade's strength is based on her Senju-uniqueness, crushing rocks in the palm of her hand at age 5? 6? That she was almost inhumanly strong prior to applying the technique which then made it "monsterous". Sakura, a civillian born girl pulling this ability out her ass, to surpass Tsusande, just... gah, it galls. Hate it.
