Here's the thing: the manga is the "blueprint" of the anime, and the latter is more likely to "feign" the facts (though I didn't say that the anime really does). Even the filler arcs may somehow affect the real flow of the story which is found in the manga. Anyway, I also enjoy watching the anime coz I wanna see battles in motion and full color.it would be best that you watch the anime..after the fight has finished he explained it to naruto and kakashi after they asked "how could anyone broke through gaara's defense".
In addition, it's not just only deidara who managed to break in the spherical defense of Gaara. Remember that chidori could also do it. But, the real question lies if SHINO can do it.
My point being is: we can't overly assume that Shino wins it. There is too much question as to whether his bugs can handle the sand attacks before it's crushed. Or, if the bugs can manage to absorb the chakra of techs in a short span of time.
A better logical comparison could be, if Shino's bugs can possibly absorb susano'o in a matter of time, then it's more likely that it can prevail against sand defense, since we saw how Sasuke prevailed over Gaara's attack during the Kage Summit.
It doesn't really mean that if Deidara, for instance, can do it, then Shino can easily do it. Remember that they have different approaches and different techs.
Anyway, the question remains unsolved. So, anybody can win this fight.
OTOH, if you merely just compare both of their resource techs, sand and bug, then the latter has more vulnerability. Why? Only because bugs are living organisms and affected by life and death, whereas sand is a lifeless thing that can be used over and over again.
