There is a particular theory regarding the Cerberus, Pain's "multi-headed dog" that Im quite found of.
He is actually Chibi, Nagato's puppy that got killed by a Paper bomb trap.
Wait, what?
Confused?
Well, as we all know, each path of Pain was created by infusing a dead body with chakra rods and "giving it life". This process gives two distinct features to them: Rinnegan eyes and the ability to perceive what the other paths can see (linked vision).
We also know, that Pain's summons also posess Rinnegan eyes and linked visions with Nagato (as seen on his fight against edos). They all also posess some form of chakra rods embebed into them.
Just a coincidence and a design choice, right?
But it goes further than that. As we can see, all the summonings are exclusive to the Paths of Pain. Neither Madara, Obito nor Sasuke mas use of any of them. Beyond that, neither of This animals are regular creatures. All of them are mutated somehow. With unique abilities.
My theory? Much like his Six Paths, Nagato used dead bodies from animals with his usage of Yin-Yang from the Seventh Path to "ressurect" them as his summons.
Not that this was already estabilished, why would he choose Chibi as the Cerberus?
Again, look at all the Paths. Each of them had belonged to a dead body, and the most important and powerful Path, the Deva, was given to his late friend, Yahiko. So who would Nagato choose his most powerful summoning (bar Gedo Mazo)? His beloved Chibi. A token of the Pain and suffering of the world.
Toughts?
