First of all it's about past, not just childhood
Guts was from a woman that was recently hanged. He came to the world in a pool of blood.
A woman that traveled with mercenaries took care of him. The same woman got a disease and died in a horrific way. He was taken care of by mercenaries, but was always given the cold shoulder because he was a kid. The head of mercenaries sparred with Guts daily, because Guts challenged him and wanted to prove himself to the head of mercenaries. He looked up to the head as a mentor and a father figure kind.
The same father figure then sold him to another mercenary for a night, and acted like nothing had happened. The head later on tried to kill him, because he thought the reason that the woman that Took care of Guts died because of Guts. Guts had to kill the head and flee from the mercenaries.
He later on joined a group, and was with them for couple of years. He was like a brother to the head of the new group, but later on the same person let demons eat the group in a horrible fashion for his own goal and raped Gut's woman after she was raped by numerous other monsters.

- nagato was born into a poor family during war time
- leaf ninja came in the house and killed nagato's parents for no reason
- nagato was outraged and killed them
- nagato then had to burry his own parents and fend for himself
- nagato almost died but other orphans came and took them with him
- they had to steal food to survive
- they eventually found jiraya, who took care of them
- they got stronger and formed their own group
- the group was blackmailed by hanzo and one of nagato's best friend, who he grew up with, died as a result
- nagato fought them off and killed most of his group, but hanzo got away
- nagato ended up losing his ability to walk
- nagato eventually found hanzo and negged him for what he did

Gut's character was probably more in depth because the writer probably had more time to develop him and the manga he was in could go the extra mile because kids probably don't read it like they do naruto
