Real talk though, the criteria for "greatest rapper of all time" is extremely subjective. Is it based on raw lyrics? Technicality? Creativity? Flow, delivery, etc? A calculated combo of all those aspects? The answers to those questions vary so much from person to person, it's only natural that people have different choices for their GOAT.

Tupac, in my opinion, was a very well-rounded emcee, who was extremely influential in shaping West Coast hip hop, and by extension shaping hip hop as a whole for eras to come. He was creative, many of his songs had deep meaning behind them and were highly revolutionary, and he helped propel rap to where it is today. IMO, he is a contender for greatest of all time. There are others, yes, but he's definitely up there.

The reason Tupac is often hailed as the best rapper is because, at the time, he was pretty much the epitome of poetry in rap. His raps were the closest you'd get to rhythm and poetry, as they were pretty much poems he wrote to instrumentals. Of course, there are songs such as Hit Em Up where its debatable if it counts as poetry, but he had poetry all the same. He's also influenced many rappers, and his lyrical talent is noteworthy.

Who the best rapper is completely up to you. Rap isn't a fight or a versus match up where you just compare who's gonna hit harder; music is far more complex, diverse and subjective. If you don't think Tupac is the best rapper ever, that's fine, but remember that at the end of the day, it's just what you think; the same as if someone said they think he is the best.

But if you ask me, Duckworth>Shakur.

Tupac is the grandfather of rap, rap wouldn't be the same without him or biggie. With that being said our generation has a tough time getting into his music, because its old school.

Imo the "death of Tupac" led to the chain of events that moved the real hip-hop scene underground. The mainstream hip-hop that's around today is with all respect sh*t (xcept few arists) (and I don't count no aenemans or lil anythings here tb frank.)

Where are Sage Francis, Everlast, Necro, Immortal Technique, Jedi Mind Tricks, La Coka, WTC, TTQ, HoP, hell where is Onyx, where are The Pharcyde, where are Eazy E, Biggie, Gang Starr, I could now go on for 10 mins u get the picture. Half those guys are underground, playing in clubs, freaking Onyx played in a crappy club in my town infront of 150 of us, and like only 50 ppl were actually listening to them and knew their music, ONYX man, ONYX!, and, the other part of the guys on the list is dead, so literally underground lol.

Mainstream rap died with Pac.
And I could put my hand in fire that Mr. Shakur is comfortably enjoying his cocktails on some tropical island, and will probably publish albums for 30 more years.

What made Pac the debatable GOAT was his ability to reach the masses. His work always had substance, but at the same time you could play it at a club(Drake... -cough-). He was never lyrically the best, and his beats were always sub-par. However, he always had an uplifting charisma about him and flow wise he doesn't lose to many.

Biggie on the other hand should make you feel ashamed for not recognizing him as an obvious contender for the GOAT. Everytime he release a track he was telling a damn story in it. Most of the times the track would be so popping, you couldn't even tell it was a story. You have to listen to Life After Death(Better than Ready to Die IMO). He'll definitely go down as one of the lyrically best storytellers to ever do it.

When I heard this from biggie I almost shat myself. I was just finding out about Biggie so this was a big point.

Instead of attempting to be condescending and witty try arguing your point. I'm not saying there aren't a few exceptions, but break down rap into lyrics and music. Lyrically most of it panders to the lowest common denominator, glorifying violence, misogyny, poverty, vanity, drugs, de-emphasis on education, etc. Musically it lacks any real musicianship. Sampling and drum programming are not hard. I can be impressed by some rappers who talk fast, but most are sluggish and can't enunciate their words.

What i got from that is , how can you hate rap as a whole when its, sometimes, an embodiment of feeling and emotions of the writer and the people he gets it from(you) hence the indirectly hating yourself part . To say you just hate rap as a whole is pretty harsh . I mean not all rap songs have meaning but when they do its almost like you're showing zero respect for people who actually put soul into their work because you've been exposed to a couple bad rap songs on mainstream radio .
