Yeah, the means of his death was pretty underwhelming. I would have preferred if he actually went toe to toe with Obito or Madara, and died in the process.

However, his death has a little more significance than just NaruHina fuel. By choosing to sacrifice himself like that, he effectively chose his own fate (like his father), emphasizing that destiny isn't something that's predetermined, because he was the one who made that choice.

That's why there's the whole bird/phoenix symbolism afterwards

. Neji could be seen as a caged bird, trapped by the concept of fate. And by making that sacrifice, he rejected that concept, breaking the cage and becoming "free".

I thought that was an amazing way to provide closure for his character and illustrate the impact that Naruto had on his life.

Yes , this is how the scenario should've went down , replace hiashi with neji and have him use wall palm on the juubi's tail , hiashi intercepts spikes , saves his daughter and passes the torch to neji after givin speech about the hyuga fate and how main/side branches should be as one then dies.

Neji "The Last" now hyuga leader , watched over by his father who always resented the fact that his son could never lead the clan would find ultimate closure in this supreme shift of fate.

Hamura splites his chakra with neji/hinata , gives speech about the genisis of their bloodline and the main/side branch drama of the hyuga and otsuki clans , then have neji and hinata fight toneri until they get overwhelmed by the tenseigan and RSM naruto finish it.

Neji gets a kid of his own and could share very good interactions with bolt in the new series.
