What's the right way?
According to what i was taught in school "an unicorn" is the right way, on the other hand "a unicorn" sounds way more natural.

It's "a'.
The rule is NOT that you use "an" before a vowel, "a" before a consonant. It is that you use "an" before a vowel SOUND, "a" before a consonant SOUND.

the U in this cast makes the "y" sound aka a consonant sound so you use "a"

A unicorn. It's an exception to the rule.

Edit:

Look and they explain why.

Y is a vowel sometimes.

Or perhaps they are not native English speakers.

If you're working as a teacher you should know things like that. It's quite simple. No one ever taught me english, yet I know it.
