Today, I made a joke to a friend getting a tattoo, about giving him a pat on the arm once he is done, on the tattooed area. The tattoo guy threatened to hit me in the face, his exact words "I'll hit you in the jaw, if you do that". I was a little surprised by the comment because I was clearly joking, I had never met this guy before and I debated flipping out and causing a big scene or just letting it go. The guy was smaller than me and I'm pretty certain I could wrecked his world. However, I'm not always the best judge of jokes or not, so I decided to stay calm and keep my need to attack him to myself. Was remaining calm the correct thing to do?

It's better to just be the bigger man and walk away and only retaliate if necessary.

That is more or less the decision I came too. I have a long history of acting too rash in situations and misinterpreting things. I felt I grew a little on the maturity scale.

You made the right decision then. If you would have tried something there is a good chance you could have gotten domestic assault charges pressed on you. Sometimes its better to set your pride aside and move on.

Also, I didn't want to injure the guy in the middle of tattooing my friend. Then my friend would have not been able to finish a very complicated tattoo and possibly be banned from the shop.

you need to learn how to have a manly sense of humor. turn a serious threat into a joke and then you can both laugh

I have always been an outcast in that aspect. I tend to take things too seriously because I tend to be serious myself. I guess it's just a personality flaw.

LOL, we all have those people in our lives. I always try and base my reactions off of how my friends react. They have a better understanding of this kind of humor and will be able to tell when it's an actual threat. I tend to assume it's all threats. I can joke with people I know like that but strangers are different.

You should've punched him in the face and knocked him to the ground and then have pat your friend in the arm.

I don't really want assault charges though.

You should have hit yourself and called the police and said that the guy assaulted you and threatened to kill you. Then laughed at him while he went to jail

Nah, you shouldn't go around punching people because of stuff like this. You should have laughed it off.

You're over thinking it.

you do that"

I doubt you did it either ways.Lol
Him saying that isn't worth a scene, it comes off more as a joke/caution rather than a threat.

You have to be careful. Crazy always beats big. Besides the non-violent route is always the correct route.
