Well Hagoromo stated that Ashura was the reason that he created the Bijuu in the first place. I believe Ashura, like Naruto, got along with them.

So my assumption would be that in his fight against Indra, the Bijuu lent their power to Ashura.

Those black orbs are either the Gudoudama or TBB. Both of which require bijuu chakra, which would also explain the appearance.



As a side note, this would also mean that Indra was powerful enough to tie Ashura in battle since it was stated that both of their bodies were destroyed.

The Bijuu's were babies at the time and it specifically stated they fought on even terms because of Ashura's chakra blooming later on. Remember, he inherited Hagoromo's Yang. Which is responsible for utilizing the Gudoudama in the first place. His avatar is nothing more than a projection of his chakra much like Indra had Susano'o, and the comparison is different given that Yang=Light and Yin= Dark. The same as how his Avatar was bright and Indra's Susano'o a much darker colour.
