The connotation of a bastard is negative. Sasuke behaved as a bastard child/anti-hero for most of the series run. He caused problems for literally everyone he came into contact with.

The only one his cancerous existence didn't seem to effect as badly was Naruto's and maybe Itachi.

To answer your question:
Their role was developing very important characters to the series.

Well but that's a good thing isn't it, how bad would the manga be without Lord Sasuke, oh my I don't even want to imagine. Lol

A ok so they were feeder characters. So my first assumption that they are two fodder was correct. U_U

It isn't a good thing to the characters in the series. He helped destroy the world and was too much of a child to endure hardships. Every decision he made was as awful as before. Naruto, Itachi and Sakura pretty much had to pat him on the back and put up with him.

Even Hashirama had to tell him stories so he could stop trying to cause any more pointless deaths.

Not to mention Sasuke himself is a feeder character. His place was predetermined by the start of the series.

Both were pretty strong characters, wouldn't consider them fodder.

He didn't do characters well? Wtf another person who doesn't get Sasukes character at all, come on people it isn't that hard. He developed Narutos entire character, without him Naruto wouldn't be who he is. Sasuke put the whole burden of his clan on his shoulders, eliminated the man who ruined his live only to find out he was lied too by the entire village. You think this is childish? I think he made rational decisions for a person with his powers. He tried to pulverize all evil, his methods were off tho but he realized that his ways were wrong. Best character development in the entire series, hands down.
