I was a long time fan of DBZ growing up when all the movies and episodes were being dubbed for American audiences. After rewatching some of the movies and episodes and even some of the clips on youtube I've noticed an overwhelming group of people that say that all 3 Dragon Ball franchises were broken, lame, overrated, and lacked story above all other things. Excluding Dragon Ball GT were they that bad? I happen to be filled with nostalgia and wonder when i rewatch the old movies. So i pose this question to you...Is DBZ overrated?

I realize the fight scenes were drawn out but there was nothing like DBZ at the time of its first debut. Remember the anime fight roots!

Anyway thank you for reading and I am genuinely interested in reading your thoughts comments and concerns about the topic. THANKS

Yeah it's slightly overrated. A lot of people have DBZ as their first anime, where planets were destroyed *gasp*. The story was pretty nice, but DBZ is not one of the all time best stories. The fighting was its best part imo although the "powering up" to it was not. It's still very nostalgic though

This.

Although, I have to say that after becoming a huge Naruto fan, I find the fights to be rather boring, as simple punches and kicks, with a few energy blasts that never work thrown in gets old when compared to the jutsus and intellectual tactics used in other fighting mangas.

But DBZ is one of the best gateway anime's for people just breaking into the scene.

I love it, thank you for your honesty

Some people overrate it, others underrate it. It all depends on the comments and opinions of the individual reviewing the content.

I still love it, but as I grew older and watched more anime, I realized its not that great and there are far better ones out there.

Powerwise? Nope.

As a story? Yes.

It's that feeling of nostalgia that people get that make them cling on, desperately averring the apparent greatness of Dragonball and it's derivatives. But anyone who didn't watch it as a child and has a sense for quality can see without affection; DB doesn't possess any quality that inspires anything.

I have to admit that it is a little overrated due to the fact that the main character(s) are very over powered.

Its easy to say that when DBZ was the first of its kind. The animes and stories that everyone moved on to started shortly after the Dragon Ball franchise ended. Every main protagonist after dbz could be stemmed back to Goku and what dbz did.

"There was nothing like it at the time of its debut"-- there you go.

That's why it was famous. Now all you hear about it though is cancerous fanboys drowning in nostalgia; yes it's severely overrated, but not for its time.

what these self glorifying idiots who post that kinda stuff on youtube forget is that dbz was never about the story it was ALWAYS about fighting. goku wasn't an adventurer or some hero he was a fighter and all he wanted to do was fight. if his winning a fight saved the world then cool he was glad but its not like he set out in order to save the world and we needed some amazing story with background. no he simply fought because there was a challenge in front of him and he wanted to overcome it in some dope fight.

to say dbz wasn't one of the best of all time is simply ridiculous. dbz got people outside of japan into animes and mangas it inspired a revolution that lead us to give naruto and one piece a try which eventually lead to bleach and then we branched off and found our own anime/ manga tastes.

whenever i watch dbz now like fights or clips I'm still as into it if not even more so than when i was a kid. sh*t i even went and bought raging blast a couple days ago and I've been playing it with my little bro who loves the fighting

explain plz

I meant its the best

Underrated :- Almost everything came out of it. Yet people don't give it enough credit. A lil behind in animation , but still has the best fights. The fights don't bore me. Naruto's war did. So..........

That doesn't excuse anything. Toriyama had his influences too and still came out with jejune storyline holding no depth. It was the sheer gimmick of it being the "first" of it's kind and hitting a time where children's TV boomed. Even then, all of the elements found in DB can be found in anime series' spanning the 60s to the 80s.

Being the first doesn't excuse a mediocre effort; Shakespeare was the first in his own way/style but he produced great plays, even the early ones. Mozart was the first in his own ways, but he produced pieces so profound that they remained unsurpassed by those who came after and inherited his style.

And no, not "every" main protagonist. Majorly the Shounens but not the entire sphere by any stretch of the imagination. Plus, I don't count influence because it has little bearing on the quality of the work, the latter of which is being discussed here. The greatest influences in modern music have made a huge impact on the music industry, but none were notably talented or produced particularly great work.

Hey man, all I want is a current Goku using the Power Pole and I'll be happy.

Speaking about the mangas:

Dragon Ball was an incredible story with entertaining fights.

DBZ was pretty decent up through the Frieza saga, after that it fell off a cliff and hit every suck boulder on the way down.
