Itachi Quote Analysis

This thread will detail some (so not all) of the character's quotes. It's set up in a manner that details the context of the scenario (why he said it) and also how the words alone can relate to real life. Plus, the quotes are in order of earlier points in his life to the later moments.

You can either randomly look at a few or read all of it. Your choice.

Quote 1

“Don't cry, Sasuke... As your big brother, I'll always protect you, no matter what...”

Context: Five year old Itachi just being an older brother to an infant Sasuke.

How it relates to real life: From an early age, people can decide what they want to value and that can follow them on for many years to come (that desire to protect the same thing).

Quote 2
You must be registered for see images

“That's not so bad. Shinobi usually live as hated people, because they're said to be a problem.”

“To be top notch is really something to think about. To have strength, means you become isolated, and become arrogant. Although, at first you only sought what you had dreamed for.”

Context: Itachi talking to Sasuke after Sasuke made it clear that he has a dislike for the former since he's an obstacle he needs to overcome in order to be the one who receives more acknowledgment from their father.

How it relates to real life: At times, being gifted and praised can have its downside. One shouldn't envy everyone who's deemed to be “the best”. Those people have trouble as well, trouble that comes with such a status (ie: jealousy from others directed at them, high expectations, etc).

Quote 3
You must be registered for see images

“You and I are unique, Sasuke. Unique brothers. I exist as the ultimate obstacle that you must strive to overcome.”

Context: Itachi telling Sasuke what his place is in the latter's life.

How it relates to real life: In real life, people look for role models, as well as one's to surpass (something to measure up to, so to speak). This can be a good or bad thing (depending upon who one chooses). Sometimes, we can even be role models to the younger generations themselves.

Quote 4
You must be registered for see images

“It's not wise to judge others by your preconceptions and their appearances.”

Context: Itachi telling the 3 Uchiha cops this, since their analysis of the type of individual Shisui was is entirely off. As is their perception of Itachi himself.

How it relates to real life: It's not right to judge a book by its cover. When we look at people, we need to speak with them and get to know them in order to understand them at an accurate level. Not just looks at them and stereotype- that's not right.

Quote 5
You must be registered for see images

“You hold onto the organization, your clan, your name. These things limit us and our capacities... these things deserve to be shunned. It is foolish to fear what we've yet to see and know!!”

Context: Itachi is just pointing out that it's not a good thing to be entirely self-absorbed in the clan, so much so that it makes them lose sight of what is important (the village is what the Uchiha were assigned to protect and revered for, it's highly ironic that they were planning to ruin things just to get power... that would defeat the purpose of everything).

The clan was also wanting a coup not mainly for what had already happened, but for suspicions of the future. Their paranoia got the better of them.

How it relates to real life: It helps if we don't only think of ourselves and what is directly pertaining to us. The world is so vast. People need to acknowledge that their actions can affect others to a significant degree, and thus evaluate them before carrying things out. It's only fair that way.

Also, people shouldn't make drastic decisions on what “could happen”. There's no way to account for everything that comes in the future, no one knows exactly what tomorrow will bring 100%. People should act on what they are sure will happen (to their knowledge) and what has already passed.

Quote 6
You must be registered for see images

“True change cannot be made if it is bound by laws and limitations, predictions and imagination.”

Context: Talking to his clan about why the coup won't suffice. It's not the answer to a legitimate problem, it's just the answer to a “what if” that doesn't have much merit and is also the result of limited understanding and worry.

How it relates to real life: When we make decisions, we should look past anxiety and things we established for ourselves... we should look at the entire scenario, not just what we view as correct.

Quote 7
You must be registered for see images

“We did not come here to start a war... regrettably, this is nothing more than nonsense. Let's leave.”

Context: He sees no need to continue the skirmish he and Kisame are having against the Konoha Jounin. This moment shows his true nature (liking to avoid pointless conflict).

How it relates to real life: Try to avoid things that are pointless. If something doesn't have any merit to it- don't even bother doing it.

Quote 8
You must be registered for see images

“Those who turn their hands against their comrades are sure to die a terrible death. Be prepared.”

Context: Itachi telling Kisame that the way traitors like them will die won't be pretty.

How it relates to real life: In this case, Itachi is referencing murder. Obviously, in real life murder has no positive effects. We're not ninja.

But, on a more relateable note- this shows that what negative action one does against a friend, they'll pay for. There are repercussions to actions.

Quote 9
You must be registered for see images

“We don't know what kind of people we truly are until the moment before our deaths. As death comes to embrace you, you will realize what you are. That's what death is, don't you think?”

Context: Letting Kisame know that they have a shot at redemption.

How it relates to real life: For some, their last moment is when they let their true nature out. How one dies can even redeem them to some extent. Before death, that's usually when one is the least insecure (at least in terms of what others think of them at that moment), so this can attribute that to a degree.

Quote 10

“You're still acting like a child. You're living in a fantasy world... you need to come to terms with the fact that you, as a shinobi, will be forced to make impossible decisions like this.”

Context: Itachi initially telling Naruto this when he answers that if Sasuke attacked the village, he'd stop him without letting either (Sasuke or the village) get harmed and would somehow find a way to do so.

(This is later retracted within the same chapter as the conversation went on and Itachi placed his faith in Naruto, also giving him that crow.)

~Itachi's statement here is stemming from his own experience. He is one of the only characters to be put in a realistic situation as a shinobi. He was in a lose-lose situation between his family and clan. No one else has had to experience such a scenario. I appreciate Kishimoto for writing this into the story, simply because in Shonen... doses of reality seem to be lacking.

How it relates to real life: At times, we can deal with problems in which we have to choose from options we loathe and are not proud of. We can't just magically solve everything or find the perfect answer.

Quote 11
You must be registered for see images

"People live their lives bound by what they accept as correct and true. That's how they define "reality". But what does it mean to be "correct" or "true"? Merely vague concepts... their reality may all be a mirage. Can we consider them to simply be living in their own world, shaped by their beliefs?"

Context: Itachi is giving Sasuke a hint to his true nature. Not only that, but stating a truth for their world. The "truth" for what shinobi know, is just that- what they are aware of. A few details could change the "truth" about anything entirely. Especially in a world that has much deception like their's.

How it relates to real life: In real life, society often times sets the standards for what's right or wrong. Go to a different area, and the truth we know of could be entirely different or irrelevant. People know what they know and often times stick to it, but that doesn't mean that what they believe is the same for everyone.

Quote 12

“Every jutsu has a weak point.”

Context: Just saying that every technique is flawed in some manner or another.

How it relates to real life: Well, we're human... we can't use jutsu. However, jutsu is one of the most important things in NV. It denotes power, which usually denotes one's role in their world.

In the real world, we do many things and hope some to be “flawless”. Truth is, not every action we consider to be “perfect” will be 100% bullet-proof. So, we should account for this and accept it.

"You certainly have become stronger...you gained power. But you seem to be forgetting something very important. Listen and remember. The reason the people of the village, who used hate you... started to admire you and consider you their comrade... is that you've always worked hard because you wanted to be acknowledged by them. You said "It's thanks to everybody that I could come this far". If now that you are more powerful you start to forget others, to be arrogant and to be attached to your ego...one day you will become just like Madara. No matter how powerful you become, never try to shoulder everything alone. Otherwise, you will undoubtedly fail. Your father Minato could be Hokage because he had your mother Kushina and all the others. Your dream is the same as your father's, isn't it? Then, remember. It's not if you become Hokage everyone will acknowledge you. It is the ones who are acknowledged that become Hokage. Do not forget your friends."

Context: Telling Naruto not to take on the burden entirely alone.

How it relates to real life: One can take on more than they're supposed to since they wish to alleviate the burden from others. However, this is not recommended since at times we can take on more than we are capable of achieving. Not only that, but in order to reassure ourselves, we become arrogant thinking that we're the only ones capable of such feats.

That is not recommended and people should not be afraid to ask for help if it is needed.

Quote 14

“Not just indications guide you on the path you walk...”

Context: Itachi tells Sasuke that not only “signposts” (indications) guide one's path in life.

How it relates to real life: Friends and environment in general can help one in life and influence them as well.

Quote 15

Sasuke: “...keep your promise!”
Itachi: “Your nature stays the same until you die... but I did die once. I will keep it.”

Context: Itachi basically telling Sasuke that even though he didn't keep his promise (forehead tap and “maybe next time) when he was alive, he'll keep it as an edo.

How it relates to real life: For some, we keep certain habits with us until we die. Can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on what it is and how you look at it. lol

Quote 16

Kabuto: "Itachi and I spent our lives working for the Leaf, yet all we got in exchage is shame and dishonor. What did the village do for us?

Itachi: "The village does have its dark side and its inconsistencies. But, I'm still the Leaf's Itachi Uchiha.

Context: Itachi is basically the only character on the side of the protagonists to admit that Konoha is a hypocritical set-up to a degree (as are most of the villages in this series).

He doesn't feel pride in the village system itself due to this, nor does he support it. However, he still will protect the village even in death. Why? Because it's out of a sense of humanity. People are living there and if he has a chance to save them or aid the Alliance (thus the shinobi world), then why not? He's being selfless.

This even perplexes Kabuto and Sasuke. If anyone has a right in this series to hinder Konoha, it's Itachi, for the situation the echelons were partly responsible for putting him in. However, he still opts for protecting them.

How it relates to real life: It is an amazing thing to not hold a grudge against those that have wronged you, and to instead put negative feelings aside in order to help them. Even if they don't deserve it.

Quote 17

Itachi: "Kabuto... you're not Orochimaru. It's fine to imitate someone that you respect, but do not act like you're him. There is no way you can become him."

Kabuto: "Most people, when they try something new, start from imitating others. Like Sasuke-kun imitated you."

Itachi: "That is something you do in order to grow. It's not to be used as a costume to pretend to be someone you are not!"

"Even if you try to link yourself to someone you deem worthy of praise... you won't find the reason for your existence there. I will say it one last time. Do not try to deceive yourself with lies. The ones who do not acknowledge themselves will eventually fail."

Context: Warning Kabuto not to aim to be Oro 2.0

How it relates to real life: It is perfectly fine to have a role model. But unhealthy to be so obsessed with them that we lose who we are and attempt to make their identity our own. We can learn things here and there from them, but we need to stay original and keep true to ourselves.

Quote 18
You must be registered for see images

Kabuto: “No need to talk like that in front of me. I envy your belonging to the Uchiha clan.”

Itachi: “Uchiha is just a name, it just refers to our roots and clan. It doesn't mean anything by itself.”

Context: Informing Kabuto that one's name doesn't define who they are.

How it relates to real life: Names and heritage are not the be all, end all, of an individual. They are not something to be used in order to devalue others, nor something used to think of another as better. One's own actions are more important.

Quote 19

“There is no trust in lies, you don't get any comrades to rely on. And lies... also make you unable to look at your own self.”

Context: Itachi making clear what exactly is wrong with lying.

How it applies in real life: If one consistently lies, they lose who they really are. If one cannot be honest with themself... then how can they be expected to be honest to anyone else? They can't be. The truth is the best thing, if possible.

Quote 20
You must be registered for see images

“A strong person is someone that can forgive and accept his own self.”

Context: After Izanami is activated, Itachi says this to Kabuto as the illusion continues.

How it relates to real life: People need to accept themselves for what they are and know what they cannot do. There's no need to feel guilty over not being able to achieve something. We are who we are and nothing changes this.

Quote 21
You must be registered for see images

"To deceive myself, I stopped trusting in other people's strength. In Kabuto's case, to deceive himself he is convince that other people's power is his own power. I understand him. We were both played with by this shinobi world. And we can't forgive and acknowledge ourselves. What he is doing is wrong. But it's also wrong to just blame him. I want him to realize this before dying, unlike me."

Context: Itachi's common ground with Kabuto.

How it relates to real life: At the end of the day, it's incorrect just to judge a person immediately, even if you believe they're wrong. You could relate to them, you never know.

Quote 22

“It may be that a perfect being does not exist at all in the world. Sometimes, two opposites are actually two sides of the same coin. They can only succeed when actually working together.”

Context: Letting Sasuke know that a perfect person does not exist.

How it relates to real life: Friends and other people in our lives can complete us. Because no one is without flaws, so in order for something to be deemed “perfect”, our loved ones can make up for that by helping us in our endeavors (people can keep each other in check).

"I always lied to you, telling you to forgive me. I always kept you away, with my own hands...I didn't want... to involve you...If I had faced you from the start... tried to see things from your point of view and talked with you about the truth... But I failed, and no matter what I say now, it still won't reach you. That's why I'm finally going to say what I really think. You don't have to forgive me... No matter what you decide to do from now on... I will love you forever."

Context: Itachi getting closure with Sasuke.

How it relates to real life: It's good to let go and put faith in a loved one. Even if we're afraid to at first.

tl;dr- He had quite a few lines that truly stick and it's evident that Kishimoto gave this much thought when developing the character (hence his dialogue was never wasted). Also, it's pretty nice that his lines not only fit within the story, but lessons can be learned directly from them.

Great thread! It's nice to have all these quotes in a single place as Itachi has some of the most meaningful dialogue in the series.

Having good insight and making good threads have little or nothing to do with being a moderator. Though I suppose there might be something else present in this case that could ultimately prove to be invaluable in that regard...
