Itachi doesn't fluff-away after fighitng Kabuto, he either;
- he remains by Sasuke's side or
- directly enters the fight to help Naruto
He's praised and acknowledged by Kage for defeating Kabuto and ending the Edo Tensei technique.

Itachi vs. Madara....................................Itachi vs. Obito
Itachi fighting alongside Hokage.
He's then made alive again by Madara/Obitio who then takes his eyes (because they're better than Kakashi's single one).
In the end Sasuke (with great foresight) held his old eyes in a scroll and and gives them to Itachi.
BAM! EMS Itachi with no terminal illness = badass shinobi.
I'll even allow Sakura to be the one who has the honour of implanting them - even though he couldn't probably do it better himself
Itachi is reinstated as a Konoha shinobi by Tsunade.
Kakashi waves his right to be Rokudaime and Itachi is sworn in.
Then comes the Era of Awesome and finally the Uchiha have a Hokage.
Sasuke ceases to be a whiny ***** and all is made right with the world.
