Actually light defeated L straight and fair.Light wasn't going against L alone ,he went against the whole world,how do you expect a normal highschool teen to kill a guy who never even shared a picture of himself,hiding his name by usuing the letter L?

>Light was not a normal highschool student. He had his sources, police, multi shinigamis, brain etc. >Hiding a name was a problem for him but he had things with which he could know it. The sources which L was using were all worldy sources, and light knew how to counter them effectively. EVEN then L dominated him on a few points in their game even with what he had. On the other hand, the things which light had on his side were supernatural and there was Absolutely NO way of L to know them. Even shinigamis started lying for light. Now the impressive thing is, L had light. He had everything solved and was even going to solve the 13days limit(fake rule) which meant the end for both misa and light. Even with being at such a huge disadvantage L came this far, this close to light. To me its so obvious that L was the better one out of the two, much better actually.
