I highly doubt that, from the beginning of part 1 he was obsessed with killing itachi. Starting from part 1 up until the moment when he finished talking with hokages he was just a dumbass manipulated by Itachi, Orochimaru, Tobi (Obito). Only after talking with Hokages he finally started thinking for himself.

The mangaka still said that he views Sasuke as looking for the secrets of Kaguya, when he was asked about why Sasuke had been gone as a wanderer for years. U_U
