Wrong.

Indeed, the hyperbole was used when stated that he did "9001 pushups". However, the whole sentence first must be percieved, actually, as ironic, because, this sentence is complete opposite of reality. And, in this case, the use of it is really obvious.

Now, irony and sarcasm sometimes can not be separated. That is how similar they can be, especially when we are talking about written form. But, it is pure and utter BS that sarcasm can not be detected unless you know the person. And sarcasm is literary device in some cases.

But languge is not a thing that you can explain with few definitions, language is a subtle live matter that somtimes functions in many directions, which are not easily defined by language science. So that is why we need to listen and read carefully and not to throw wrong definitions about something that can not be defined clearly.
