I think 1 tail is 2 tiers above CM...but I still thought it was a boss fight.

It was expected. His need for revenge against Itachi was too strong, once he told his new team there was someone he had to kill it was no surprise he was going to leave the village eventually. The curse mark sealed the deal because once he felt the power he wanted to know how to use it. Seeing Naruto get stronger solidified his determination to be strong.
