Seriously, I notice that Naruto is one of the few animes with a black cast of characters that features them drawn normally, and doesn't make them all stereotypical idiots. Sure, there are characters like Killer Bee, but he's shown to be an oddity, and his behavior was ultimately shown to be the result of his kind, fun-loving nature (similar to Naruto's). In fact, if it weren't for Bee, Naruto would've never mastered Nine-Tails power and Naruto considers him sort of like family from the War Arc onwards (Uncle Bee). And, again, most of the black characters don't actually act like Bee (such as Darui, calm and level-headed, and, eventually the Fifth Raikage, and also Omoi, also level headed with a compulsion for analytical thinking). I look at them and then I look at Dragon Ball Z (with no black cast and the few black people being drawn in blackface) and think Naruto is far better in that regard. Also, I'd say Bleach handled it pretty well too, what do you think?

I don't read many, I can name DBZ, the most popular anime of all time.
Just telling ya akira (creator of dbz) and most japanese at that time probably had not seen a black person. Japan was xenophobic. He was clearly ignorant, doesn't mean he was trying to be racists.

Toriyama had already lived in Hawaii at that point and that was during the 80s and 90s.

I don't mean addressing race, I just mean having black characters and treating them like normal people, not stereotypes.

Where did you get that info? I actually want to know, I thought he stayed in japan with his wife. The animation (toei) exaggerated their skin color. In the manga its not as dark.

Teh interwebz and, it has nothing to do with skin tone, its about facial structure.

Yeah easily could be a lie, js. What's wrong with the facial structure and which stereotype is it supporting? Akiras style is like that, dr slump easily proves he has crazy gag funny looking characters.

That is a pretty icky connection. But, once again japanese back then were xenophobic, their views of any person of color were ignorant because they had never encountered them. He's not racist just ignorant and had a clouded view on anyone that wasn't Japanese.
