I feel sorry for people who don't see how Hinata is at least as important as Naruto as a STEREOTYPE - his being "never give up", while her being "self-sacrificial love".
In comparison to Sasuke's "revenge is my life" and Sakura's "love needs no reason to make no sense", it's that much astonishingly deeper.

Sasuke wasn't a character based on revenge. He was based on loss and hate. Revenge was just a factor. Naruto is also very well fleshed out. Sakura and hinata are pairing fodder and dog shit.

Try comparing it to Sakura being so much into "Sasuke-KUN" that it had ruined her on numerous occasions - whereas "Naruto-KUN"ing of Hinata actually made her GROW so much from her meek and weak introduction self.
Sakura only grew in strength, but her personality stayed exactly the same immature Sasuke-fangirl she was introduced as.
Hinata grew a pair of balls and was totally changed by her admiration of Naruto.
Proof?
Sakura couldn't kill Sasuke OR stab Obito's eye - simply because she was too hesitant (for different reasons).
Hinata faced Pain and slapped Naruto in front of everyone - I bet you'd never expect either from the P1 Hinata, no?
