Without that speed, he gets negged by Gaara even harder and eaten, as does every other opponent. Deidara, Ei, Danzo, Orochimaru, Yamato, all merk him if not his basic copy ability. Rock Lee effectively is Sasuke's guardian angel.

Lol Lee himself told Sasuke how he may be able to see his moves but he deosn't have a body like his to be able to keep up with it.Sasuke trained and attained a High Speed Body like Lee's.If he didn't then his body wouldn't be able to handle those fast moves which would harm his body like it did in the prelims.

When Sasuke copied Lee's Taijutsu,and used it in the prelims,he felt the negative impact because he didn't train in order to attain a body suited for High Speed Taijutsu.

Let me clarify: regardless of sasuke getting faster/fast as Lee, Sasuke would have still survive/won because plot demands it. At the end of the day, Kishi would have found a way for Sasuke to leave off to Orochimaru....
