Many People agree that is true but say that it provides only frontal defense thus having a weak point but many people over look the fact that the databook says that Yata "Has no physical form"... thus it can "change it's properties" including shape as displayed below.

Right, but it still defeats the argument. Plus Gaara showed he can use his sand to grind earth into more sand so he could do it on a rocky ground also or pretty much anywhere his sand can break into the ground at.
