There many amazing written characters, but if I have to pick one, it's light Yagami for the win.

His goals are better then Madara, his intelligence suppress Itachi, His Egos are more Badass then Sasuke.

In power terms : He solos your FV. ( Power does not mean well written, am just saying this xD

Has a nice backstory. Levels himself in his power, may not look the best, but it's better than some hyperactive 11 year old who can't read a milk bottle.

While I really do like Light, I prefer Lelouch. While they are quite similar, Lelouch was very human, unlike Yagami. Lelouch actually cared very deeply for all of his friends, and you can see how visibly affected he is and how troubled he is throughout the course of his revolution. Not saying Light didn't care for his loved ones initially, but as Death Note progressed he just became hellbent on accomplishing his goal. And while that is noble, it isn't all that interesting to watch a main character just toss aside everything he has without so much as thinking twice or blinking at the mere notion of such. All of the losses Lelouch experienced weighed heavily on him, while Light (as seen by the end of Death Note), he was using the death of a certain someone (you'll know who) as an example of why the world would never have true peace. Light didn't care about the sacrifices he made, while Lelouch was tearing himself apart because of the decisions he made.
