Is yang release really a requirement for mokuton?

Databooks should only be taken into consideration when something isn't explained in the manga at all. If it contradicts the manga, then you're not really supposed to take it seriously. Manga>databook, and yes, Hashirama's DNA is the only requirement.

Hashis DNA is the only requirement as far as the manga goes. You still need a strong body and life force though to actually handle and control Mokuton, otherwise it could consume you as it almost did Danzo.
