And Akise didn't know he wasn't real until Deus told him, and he genuinely thought that his love for Yuki made him different from Deus' will. He wasn't forced to considering he wasn't even an Academy student at the time... he wasn't even supposed to participate in that ritual yet. He did it mainly for his own amusement and his great desire to be one of the individuals that would join the 7 Swordsmen. That's why he was known as the "Demon of the Hidden Mist" afterwards and the practice was discontinued entirely.

People didn't think the sengoku era, the french and american revolutions, world wars 1 and 2 among other conflicts were "cool," but they happened and they saved far more lives than they took.
